Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, offers a variety of activities and attractions. These options provide a well-rounded experience of Puerto Peñasco, catering to a variety of interests from relaxation and exploration to dining and nightlife.
Sandy Beach: A popular destination that offers miles of sandy shores. Sandy beach hosts most of the beachfront condo resorts. Enjoy a leisurely day on the sand or engage in various water sports, such as swimming, snorkeling, water skiing, parasailing, jet skiing, surfing, and fishing.
Playa Bonita / Playa Hermosa: One of the most popular beaches stretching from the Peñasco Del Sol and Pinacate resorts to the resorts on Sandy Beach. This beach is family friendly and a favorite of the locals and tourists alike. Enjoy various water sport activities or sit back and listen to the banda. This beach is filled with culture, vendors, and lots of exploring during low tide. Numerous restaurants, bars, and shops are within walking distance.
Mirador Beach: Located near the Old Port, Mirador Beach features both sandy and rocky areas, ideal for tide pooling during low tide. The area is home to popular restaurants such as Manny’s, Pink Cadillac, the Pithaya, and Baja Cantina.
Estero Morua: Also known as Rocky Point 360. A secluded beach nestled just past Playa La Joya, known for its abundant wildlife. The beach is on an estuary with turquoise blue water. It offers breathtaking views of both sides of the water. Visitors can walk out onto the sandbars, giving the sensation of being in the middle of the ocean. The beach is part of a private community, and only members can park directly at the beach. However, public parking is available at the entrance. From the parking area, it's a brief 5-minute walk to the start of the beach. This beach is a little hard to find, but worth the trouble. It's not overly crowded, making it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility.
La Cholla: Situated at the southern end of Cholla Bay and Laguna del Mar. Though mostly rocky, it is favored for its calm waters. A submerged 15-mile reef offers excellent scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities. The high tidal ranges make it ideal for tide pool exploration, and La Cholla has several restaurants and bars such as JJ’s Cantina. Known to be a great fishing spot for red snapper, whitefish, halibut, gold-spotted bass, and black sea bass.
Las Conchas: Located in the Las Conchas community, this 6-mile stretch of sandy, shallow beach allows for long walks even when the tide is not out. It is abundant in shells and offers good fishing. During March, April, and May, be cautious of stingrays buried in the sand along the shallow beaches. To avoid them, drag your feet while walking in the water.
Mi Playa: A little difficult to find. Mi Playa is accessible via a dirt road off Boulevard Fremont. There is parking and numerous palapas for shade. Due to stronger currents, it is not recommended for children to swim here.
Playa La Joya: It is close to town, yet it is common to find yourself almost alone on this beach. It’s known for its serenity and beautiful scenery. Playa La Joya is perfect for sunbathing, walking, and shell collecting.
Playa Encanto: Located next to Playa La Joya and about 12 miles from Puerto Peñasco, this beach offers tranquility and a wide, sandy, rock-free shoreline. Home to Luna Blanca and Encanto resorts.
Pelican Beach: From the main highway north out of town, take the marked turnoff to Laguna Shores/Laguna del Mar. This beach fronts the Laguna Shores development along the curve in Cholla Bay. The pristine Cholla estuary is rich with wildlife. Due to rapid growth in the area, it is important to help keep this beach clean. Named for the large number of brown pelicans, it is a great spot for clamming or crabbing. The beach stretches to the southwest until it reaches the La Cholla community.
Tucson Beach: Located in Cholla Bay, this small stretch of beach is ideal for wading and swimming due to its calm waters when the tide is in. When the tide is out, the rocky landscape is revealed, where sea lions can often be seen relaxing on the rocks.
El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve: The UNESCO World Heritage site features unique volcanic craters, sand dunes, and diverse wildlife. There are several trails of varying difficulty levels, offering stunning views of the volcanic landscape.
Cerro de la Ballena: A short but rewarding hike that offers panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and the city of Puerto Peñasco. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels.
Las Conchas Beach Walk: While not a traditional hike, walking along the pristine Las Conchas Beach provides a peaceful and scenic experience. The beach stretches for miles, allowing for long walks with the sound of the waves.
Sandy Beach to Cholla Bay: This coastal trail connects Sandy Beach to Cholla Bay, offering beautiful seaside views. It’s a longer walk, suitable for those looking for a more extended hike.
Isla San Jorge (Bird Island): While primarily a destination for kayaking and snorkeling, you can also explore the island on foot. It’s a boat trip away from the mainland, but the unique landscapes and abundant wildlife make it worth the journey. This trip can be booked through many activity vendors like Rocky Point Adventures or CEDO.
Tips for Hiking in Puerto Peñasco:
Water: Carry plenty of water, especially during the hotter months.
Sun Protection: Use sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking shoes for rocky or uneven terrain.
Timing: Early morning or late afternoon hikes are best to avoid the midday heat.
Navigation: Some trails are not well-marked, so consider using a GPS or hiking app.

Circus Mexicus: This is an annual music festival held in Puerto Peñasco, typically in June. Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers headline the event, and it features multiple days of music, beach activities, and fun.
Holy Week (Semana Santa): Holy Week in Rocky Point is one the most important festivities of the Christian liturgical year. Holy week dates change and are calculated according to the Gregorian calendar and the dates can vary between April 4th and May 8th. During this week, Rocky Point is filled with locals and tourists coming to enjoy the parties that begins early in the morning and extend well into the morning as well.
Mermaid's Market: First and third Saturday of the month at the Shrimp plaza. A vibrant artisan market held on Saturdays, featuring handmade crafts, trinkets, jewelry, art, and local food products. It's a great place to find unique souvenirs and enjoy a lively atmosphere.
